The United States Army Institute of Surgical Research (USAISR) is located in San Antonio, TX within Joint Base San Antonio and adjacent to San Antonio Military Medical Center. We are the premier research center for the Department of Defense for combat casualty care for Warfighters. From the dedicated work our staff produces we save lives through innovative solutions for combat casualty care from time of injury through rehabilitation.
Our diverse scientific and clinical staff are at the forefront of technology and therapeutic products, developing, conducting rigorous testing, and evaluating tomorrow’s medicine today. From exploring new methods to spur tissue regeneration to providing better options for resuscitation and wound coverage USAISR’s unique mission offers young investigators an opportunity to conduct translational and traditional bench top research with real impacts on Soldier survival and recovery.
Postdoctoral researchers currently comprise 30% of our current research staff. Assigned fellows and associates work with their advisors within our task areas. Postdoctoral experiences within a government laboratory are similar to those found in academia and industry with expectations of the fellows and associates to establish de-novo protocols under the guidance of their advisors and task area managers. Postdoctoral fellows and associates additionally learn how to navigate intramural funding streams and are encouraged to seek extramural funding opportunities.
Postdoctoral researchers at USAISR have membership with the national postdoctoral associations and through a collaborative agreement with the University of Texas Health and Science Center San Antonio (UTHSCSA) are eligible for participation in many of UTHSCSA’s science events and outreach programs.
