NCO Creed

To all newly assigned Soldiers,

On behalf of the Commander, Institute of Surgical Research (ISR), Fort Sam Houston, Texas, I would like to welcome you and your family to the DOD´s only comprehensive trauma, burn and surgical/critical care unit.

We are part of the Medical Research and Material Command, Fort Detrick, Maryland. Our research facility and headquarters building is collocated with Brooke Army Medical Center. I am sure you will find this assignment both professionally challenging and personally rewarding.

Since its inception in 1943, the ISR has continued to set new standards in research, prevention and treatment of traumatic and burn injuries. The expectations are high and we will meet the continuous challenges that we face. You will become a part of our team and help to ensure our success in defending freedom and our way of life.

As the Sergeant Major, I am here to make your transition to Fort Sam Houston as smooth as possible. You will be working with the finest medical, research and administrative professionals in the DOD. A sponsor will meet you on day one to assist you in your transition. You can learn more about USAISR as you explore this web site. We also have an AKO site at https://www.us.army.mil/suite/page/595100 where you can learn more about our mission and find important unit contact information.

We are looking forward to your arrival and I know we will be successful assisting you in your transition here to Fort Sam Houston.

Here is some information that maybe of use to newcomers:

  • Geographically, Fort Sam Houston is in the south central part of the state of Texas.
  • The closest commercial airport is San Antonio International; approximately a 10-15 minute drive from Fort Sam Houston.
  • Housing in San Antonio and its surrounding communities is rather spread out, so if you choose to live off post, you could have a 30-60 minute commute.
  • All post housing is within 2-3 miles of the ISR.
  • Fort Sam Houston has a PX, Commissary, several Shoppettes, and a Bowling Alley.
  • Most medical and dental care is provided at Brooke Army Medical Center, or the TMC and Dental Clinic on Fort Sam Houston. Some specialties are cared for at Wilford Hall Medical Center, which is located on Lackland Air Force Base, approximately 25 miles South East of Fort Sam Houston.
  • If you are coming from overseas, I recommend that you ship your POV at least 45 days prior to your departure date to ensure it arrives in country prior to your arrival.
  • Government housing is limited; you may be placed on a waiting list until a vacancy occurs. The time on the list will depend on any number of considerations, availability, family size, etc.
  • In addition, if you are traveling with your pet, many hotels do not take animals or charge you additional costs not covered by your TLA. Consider this before bringing everyone over at once.
  • Often it is best to arrive alone, and after housing is issued, send for the family. Often families must remain in a hotel for 30 days or more awaiting housing. In any event, be prepared to pay out of pocket expenses for animals until you sign or move into, on or off post quarters.

I want to make sure that you have a good understanding of what to expect with your new assignment to the Institute of Surgical Research. Please keep me informed as to your status and arrival date, contact me if any sponsor-related concerns or special needs are not being met, or let me know if you have any questions that I can help you with.

Again, welcome to the Institute of Surgical Research!
